About the Artist

I'm a teaching artist who is passionate about semi-precious gems and texture in silver. I respond to what is visible in the stone, so that it can be enhanced by it's silver setting. I teach because I enjoy interactions with other artists and feel personally rewarded when witnessing excitement that comes when my students finish a piece and can wear their work home. I have a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

I teach the process, not the product. I want students to learn how to engineer their own designs. Every week we learn new skills that build on what we learned the previous week with an emphasis on studio safety. That means that our work is an extended process and slowly gratifying.

I began my study of jewelry metals, under Kim Boyle and remembered my childhood love of collecting stones. It was a natural progression for me to love using semi-precious gems in my designs. I'm not sure that I've met a gem that I don't like!

My pieces are hand fabricated and not mass produced. I start with sketches on paper around the chosen gemstones. I build the pieces from flat sheets of silver and silver wire.  In this way the stones dictate the character of the piece and each piece is as individual as you. I make one of a kind pieces because the stones are all unique. I make my own embellishments using fine silver precious metal clay fired in my  kiln and/or by saw piercing them.

When you purchase a piece of my jewelry, I hope you'll enjoy it for many years to come.  -Dori
